The elephants were made from newspapers collected during the 7 week journey which started in The Netherlands so a caravan of Dutch, French and Italian speaking elephants crossed a plain that celebrates the Fall of the Fascist regime (25 July 1943) in Italy to the doorway in this village where blood donations are made.

Lots of children came and although my Italian was pitiful, they seemed to understand that the elephants had a mission and sometimes needed help when gusts of wind came along. I was impressed by the geniune interest and by the depth of the questions I was asked by the adults. As often happens we had discussions that touched on materialism, engagement, the poetic, multiculturalism, the postmodern and spirituality - all of course in connection with these pachyderms.
