Near the beginning of the March 14th two hour performance,
Under the Sails, Todd Mall, Alice Springs.
This Croatian elephant is made out of newspaper collected from a village on the Croatian coast.
The first airing with this herd was made in
Istanbul in 2011. In the
eight airings since, elephants have been both added and retired from the herd. One or two new elephants from newspapers from Alice Springs will be added to the herd for the next occasion while usually one or two need to be retired due to wear and tear. In this manner, not only is the mutability of each individual influenced by events, such as being stood on or such as in Istanbul being bitten by street dogs, but the languages they bear change over time as well. For example for the first three performances with the herd, none of the elephants bore texts in English while now having travelled to six locations in New Zealand about a third of the herd was now English speaking.
