“Letters of the Living” (Letters van de Levende) are a circle of drawings originally for an installation of 19 flags made for the 1996 Oerol international arts festival. That year´s theme was magnetism, and I chose a period of nineteenth-century Iranian Bahá'í history as my starting-point. The first 19 followers of this religion took great personal risks, in leaving an established religion to become part of a newly emerging one. As I worked on these drawings, I realised that uncertainty, restraint and alienation were as much a part of any quest as desire, passion and conviction. So these drawings and flags became the result of my own quest to express the magic, attraction, uncertainty and challenge of the spirit. The circle is not only a reference to sufi mysticism but also a symbollic sky (heavenly or spiritual realm) for the constellation of 'letters' (apostles) of a new alphabet (religion).

One of the words for an artist in New Zealand Māori is "mahi a ringa" which means work by hand and two works here are from a series of paintings and prints where a female Māori-like ancestral figure's tongue turns into a hand that gestures. “She cast spells” is a print made from a photograph of a drawing made with my hair in the snow, and Fran is a friend who wears a Baha'i ring.

Sonja born and raised in Aotearoa | New Zealand, has lived in the Netherlands since 1989 and moved to Leiden in 1999. These drawings were made in response to the poem, New Vessels. Here are the lines these four works here relate to:
The gully that I cleared last year
is troubled with new growth.
...
the vortex of the fallen leaves
whirling under water
....
dead fish glide past, the falling tide:
who can guess the first day
when the ocean starts to stink?
...
Wherever two or three are gathered
footfalls echo
down the passage we did not take,
towards the door we never opened.
